Intruder Assaults Resident Sleeping On His Couch

The victim of an assault that occurred in the early hours Friday told police officers that he had been asleep on his couch when an intruder entered his home.

The victim, age 43, reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that he had been sleeping on the couch in his North Church Street, Ethridge home when he heard someone enter through the front door. He said he awakened to find a man he knew standing close-by.

The victim told deputies that the man repeatedly demanded that he give him money. He said that when he arose from the couch, the man hit him in the face, knocking him to the floor.

A witness reported he had been sleeping in a bedroom when he heard a commotion. He told deputies he grabbed a baseball bat and went to investigate. He found the victim lying on the floor in the living room with the intruder assaulting him.

The witness told deputies that when he entered the living room, the intruder reached toward his waistband and told him to, “Get back or he would kill them both.” He said that he stepped back, but that he never saw any type of weapon. He said that the intruder took $20 from the coffee table and left.

The victim sustained a busted lip, bruising beneath one eye, and some swelling. He told deputies that some of his teeth had been loosened, as well.

Investigation into the assault is on-going through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
