District Attorney Issues Scam Warning

District Attorney Mike Bottoms has issued a warning to local residents to stay alert to a scam that is currently circulating in the area.

Bottoms said that a local senior citizen recently notified him that she had received a call from an individual claiming to be her grandson. He said that the caller told the victim that he was in Mexico City, was in trouble, and needed $1,100 immediately.

The victim refused to easily fall for the ruse. She said she questioned the caller about the names of his wife and children. She then asked if he could tell her the nickname he had for her. The caller’s guess was incorrect, confirming that the call was part of a scam. She reported that the man asked her, “Why are you asking me these questions?”

Bottoms recommends that individuals who receive such calls should follow this resident’s example and ask questions to confirm the caller’s identity. Before you send money, Bottoms urges residents to contact his office at 931-762-7777 so that they can check the legitimacy of the call.
