Alabama Man Captured In Last Week’s Pursuit Now Charged With Murder

An Alabama man captured last week after leading law enforcement officers on a four-county/two-state pursuit, has been charged with murder in connection with the March 1 shooting death of a Tuscumbia teenager.

Twenty-eight year old Benjamin Owen Young, a resident of Staunton Avenue in Florence, began to flee form authorities in Muscle Shoals the evening of March 4, traveling in a stolen Ford Focus.

Young led his pursuers into Lawrence County, turning onto Iron City Road (Highway 227). Local law enforcement agencies had been notified of the pursuit. The chase ended when Young crashed into a patrol car driven by Loretto Police officer Derrick Thomas. The impact caused Young’s vehicle to overturn, coming to rest on its top.

Young was arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was held on multiple charges including aggravated assault of a police officer, reckless endangerment, evading arrest, and theft of property.

Since the time of his arrest, Tuscumbia authorities have brought charges of capital murder against Young and two companions. The other men have been identified as Chicago, Illinois natives Peter Gerold Capote, 22, and Thomas Charles Hubbard, 31, both of whom reside on Midland Avenue in Muscle Shoals.

The three are charged in the death of Kijana Freeman, age 19, and the injury of a seventeen year old boy, both residents of Tuscumbia. The pair was shot at around 11:00 p.m. inside a car outside of Spring Creek Apartments in Tuscumbia. Authorities allege that the teens were lured to the location through the ruse of the purchase of a game system. They indicate that the three accused pulled into the parking lot in a stolen truck, then opened fire on the pair, possibly with a semi-automatic rifle. Freeman was pronounced dead at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield. The minor was flown to Huntsville Hospital where, Monday, he was said to be in stable condition.
