Reports Of Malnourished Pets Investigated

Law enforcement officials have been called upon to investigate several allegations regarding malnourished pets in recent days, including dogs at both Leoma and Summertown residences.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were summoned by a concerned citizen to a Fire Tower Road, Summertown home on Saturday.

The complainant reported a resident was not properly caring for a dog at the home. Although they attempted to make contact with the dog and owner, deputies noted that no one answered their hails.

Deputies were dispatched to the same location on Sunday when the concerned citizen called to say she had the dog in question. Reports indicate the dog “did appear poor” in condition with ribs protruding.

The reporting deputy noted that he was again unable to make contact with anyone inside the home. He advised the concerned citizen to care for the animal, should she choose to do so, until the matter could be resolved.

On Monday deputies were summoned to a home on Leoma’s Dogwood Lane. There a neighbor reported a mother dog and nine puppies appeared to be in poor condition.

Deputies were unable to make contact with the dog owners at that time, but indicated efforts to resolve the matter could continue.
