Identity Thief Racks Up Nearly $2k In Local Mans Name

A Weakley Creek Road resident discovered recently that someone had illegally obtained credit cards in his name, racking up nearly $2,000 in charges.

The victim, age 54, reported the crime on Monday to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. The victim reported during the weekend he had received a statement in his name for a Macy’s credit card account. He told deputies that someone had used his identity to obtain the cards, then accumulated $1,803.39 in his name.

The victim determined that the charges had been made on January 27 and 28 at Northlake and Southpark, North Carolina.

The victim told deputies that while he had received both a Macy’s American Express and Macy’s house card in the mail, since he had not applied for them he cut them up and disposed of them. He said he then received two letters from Macy’s regarding his credit protection plan.

The victim did contact the company and cancelled both accounts. He said that the personal information on the application did match his, but that a different driver license number had been noted.

Investigation into the crime is continuing at the current time.
