West Lawrence Man Cited For Burning Without Permit

A resident of western Lawrence County faces charges after conducting some burning on his property during the weekend, without having obtained the proper permit needed to do so.

Fire fighters were dispatched to the scene of the fire, at 26 JR Staggs Road, around 10:30 Sunday morning. Once officers with the Tennessee Forestry Division arrived on the scene, they then summoned a deputy with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to conduct an investigation.

Deputies indicate that property owner Junior Lee Staggs, age 57, had begun a fire on the property that got out of hand. Forestry officers then discovered he had no permit allowing him to conduct outdoor burning.

In addition, reports indicate that tires were among the debris being burned. Deputies notified officials with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation about the incident. State law prohibits the burning of tires, as it releases harmful toxins into the air.

Staggs may also face charges in connection with this violation. He told deputies that he did not know there were any tires inside the debris he was burning.
