Environmentalist Discovers Drug Stash

An environmentally-minded individual checking water quality at a creek in Loretto Friday summoned law enforcement officials after discovering a cache of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The individual, a teacher, had been taking water samples near a bridge on Rascaltown Road in the Loretto area when he discovered the box containing the stash. The teacher summoned Loretto Police Chief Bobby Joe Killen to the scene. Killen requested assistance from members of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

Reports indicate the teacher found in excess of 100 syringes and a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance. The contraband was concealed inside a shoe box.

Deputies report that there was a name written on the box, identifying a possible suspect in the case. The needles were transported to Crockett Hospital where they were properly disposed of. The remaining contraband was seized into evidence.

The case remains under investigation at the current time by officials with both departments.
