Teen Arrested Wandering In School Parking Lot

A teen was taken into police custody in the early hours Tuesday morning after officers reportedly found him wandering about in a school parking lot, barefooted and disoriented.

Lawrenceburg Police Officers on routine patrol shortly after 12:00 a.m. reported seeing an individual walking around in the parking lot at Lawrence County High School at 1500 Springer Road, near the Columbia State Community College Building.

They report that as they approached the young male he began to flee on foot. He was apprehended, however, approximately two hundred feet away.

Officers report that the teen was barefooted and that his shoes and scarf were lying around fifty feet away in the parking lot. When they asked him what he was doing on school property, the teen reportedly told them he was, “collecting sticks to make a robe.”

The teen allegedly admitted to officers that he had taken illegal narcotics, but refused to say what type. When they asked whether he was in need of medical assistance, the teen refused any such care.

Officers report locating the teen’s car a short distance away in the parking lot. The car, they report, was locked and all the handles had been broken off. A laptop computer was sitting on top of the car.

When they asked whether the car belonged to him the teen reportedly told officers he did not know. A check on the registration, however, revealed that the car was registered in the teen’s name. Officers also report finding the car keys in the young man’s coat pocket.

As a result of the incident officers report that the teen, Caleb Matthew Cothren, 19, of 523 West Point Road, was placed under arrest on charges of public intoxication and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.

Cothren is scheduled for an initial appearance in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on April 3, 2009.
