UT/TSU Extension Educational Meetings Planned For Lawrence County

The Legalities of Direct Marketing of Farm Products

There will be a meeting to discuss Marketing of Farm Products on Wednesday, March 13th beginning at 10:30am. The meeting will take place at the Lawrence County Extension Office Community Meeting Room located at 2385 Buffalo Rd. in Lawrenceburg. Lawrence County Extension Agent Wendel Smith will begin the meeting with a discussion on niche marketing of farm products. There is a lot of marketing strategies relating to the specific system of production and lots of questions to go along with these strategies. Are your products: Organic? Certified Organic? All Natural? These questions will be addressed as well as other issues with niche marketing.

Hal Pepper with the UT Center of Profitable Agriculture will conclude the educational portion of the meeting with a discussion on “Tennessee Sales Tax Regulations on the Sale of Farm Products”. Do I need to be charging sales tax on my farm products? The answer is—It Depends. Hopefully Hal will give insight to help producers better understand the answer to this question. The meeting will conclude with lunch. Although there is no charge to attend the meeting we do need you to stop by or send word if you plan to attend. Vegetable Production & Livestock & Forage Production Educational Meetings

On Thursday, March 14th UT/TSU Extension will be sponsoring a series of educational discussions on vegetable production in the morning and livestock production after lunch. The morning session will begin at 9:30 am. The location for the meeting is Ethridge Feed & Farm Supply at 82 Main St. in Ethridge. UT Extension Vegetable Specialist, Dr. Annette Wszelaki will kick the meeting off covering variety selection and she will also provide an update on “GAP”, Good Agricultural Practices. Lawrence County Extension Agent, Wendel Smith will conclude the morning session covering pesticide control strategies in vegetables. A sponsored lunch by Bayer will be served around 11:30 am.

The afternoon session focusing on livestock and forages will after lunch at 12:30 pm.. UT Extension Horse Specialist, Dr. Bridgett McIntosh will bring information to the group on Proper Horse Nutrition. Lawrence County Extension Director, Calvin Bryant will discuss forage management strategies and the afternoon session will conclude with a talk on small ruminant production led by Marshall County Extension Director, Rick Skillington.
