Debit Card Of Iron City Woman Used Fraudulently

Authorities report that the efforts of thieves who became privy to the debit card number of an Iron City woman, were thwarted by the diligence of a credit card monitoring service.

The thirty-three-year-old victim, a resident of Danley Road, reported the incident on Saturday through the Lawrenceburg Police Department. The victim reported documentation showing that between the dates of February 11, 2008, and March 1, 2008, someone had made numerous failed attempts to make fraudulent purchases via the internet, using her debit card number. Had the purchases gone through, she would have been bilked out of nearly $5,000.00. The attempted purchases included charges for airline travel and a motel stay.

The victim was notified on Saturday by the monitoring company, Metavanta, about the fraud attempts. When she checked with her bank, the victim discovered that only one purchase, for the amount of $4.95, was paid. They quickly assured her, however, that she would not be held accountable for that small amount.

Investigation into the crime is on-going at the current time.
