Resident Reports Excessive Harassing Telephone Calls

Law enforcement officials were asked to take a formal complaint last week after an Iron City man reported receiving excessive, harassing telephone calls.

The victim, age 23, told deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriffs’ Department that he had been receiving the calls from persons “wanting him to claim a $150 Walmart gift card.”

The victim reported that on February 27 alone he had received a total of 17 calls from the individuals. The following day he received four additional calls. He told deputies that he asked repeatedly for the persons to stop calling him and requested that they remove his name from their call list. The calls, however, continued to come.

Authorities warn residents who may receive similar calls that they are often made as part of an attempt to scam individuals out of their money. They warn residents to check out any such claim thoroughly before becoming further involved, and to never give out personal information over the telephone.
