Owner Proposes Projects For Vacant Historic Buildings In Downtown Lawrenceburg

The owner of several buildings in Lawrenceburg’s historic district has proposed projects to city leaders that he feels would help revitalize the area.

Darrell Valentine addressed members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council during a meeting Thursday. He proposed two projects to bring businesses into the public square area.

Valentine offered conceptual drawings of a project involving four buildings on North Military Avenue, directly across from the Crockett Theater. Valentine proposes utilizing three of the buildings for a restaurant. The fourth, the former Never Know What Shop, he proposes demolishing.

Valentine explained that if he gains approval for the project he plans to purchase parking lots at the rear of the buildings on Fain Court.

Tearing down the structure would provide ready access to those parking lots. In place of the building, he said he hopes to construct a walkway with a fountain and some outdoor seating to further enhance the property.

The second project Valentine discussed involves the Welch building situated in the southwest corner of the public square. Valentine said that he had initially planned to use the upper floor for apartments.

He told council members that the plan now is to allow use of the entire space for Community Thrift Store. The business, currently located on First Street, is a project of the local non-profit organization God’s Storehouse.

Mayor Keith Durham expressed concern about keeping the donation drop off area at the rear of the building clear and free of clutter.

Valentine said that the elevator in the building will be repaired so that it may be used to quickly move donations to the upper floor storage area. He said that, if needed, an enclosure could be constructed to prevent this from becoming an issue.

Council member Ronald Fox, who sits on the city’s Historical Planning Commission, said that the commission will convene in order to consider Valentine’s proposals.
