Truck Stolen Through Craigslist Transaction

A Summertown man reported Wednesday that his truck had been stolen through a Craigslist transaction.

The victim, age 66, reported that he had listed his 1995 Dodge Ram truck, valued at $1,500, for sale on Craigslist. He said that he had been contacted by a man wishing to purchase it and had arranged to meet with him.

The victim said that when he met with the man, along with an acquaintance, he told him that he did not have the money at that time to pay for the truck but that he was “expecting a check at any time,” and would pay him once he had received it.

The victim told deputies that he wrote out a bill of sale and allowed the man to take the truck with the understanding that he had to pay for it by January 22, 2014. Under their agreement, once he had received payment in full, the owner would then mail him the title.

When he failed to received payment, the victim said that he attempted to contact the man by telephone, using the same number where he had reached him in the past.

The individual who answered explained that the man, “Michael,” had used his telephone to call the victim previously. He informed the victim that Michael had sold the wheels off the truck around two weeks prior and later sold the truck.

Information regarding the stolen truck has been entered into the National Crime Information Center system to identify it as stolen.

Investigation in the matter is currently on-going.
