Investigation Opened Into Child Abuse Allegations

An investigation was launched during the weekend by local law enforcement agents regarding an allegation of child abuse.

The investigation was initiated Saturday by deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

A local mother reported finding numerous “handprint shaped” bruises on her four-year-old-son after retrieving him from a weekend visit with his father.

The mother reported that the child’s father had picked him up around 6:00 p.m. Friday, transporting him to his home in Lewis County. She said she made the discovery while bathing her son that evening.

She discovered bruises on the child’s torso, buttocks, legs, shoulder and arm. She told deputies that she asked her son how he had sustained the injuries. He allegedly told her that, “his daddy had whipped him for crying.”

Investigation into the allegations is being handled by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
