County Wide HOSA Leadership Training

Health Science teachers of Summertown High School, Loretto High School, and Lawrence County High School conducted a county wide leadership training on Monday, January 31st at the First Assembly of God Church in Lawrenceburg.

Students from the three high schools came together and enjoyed a day of fellowship, learning, and competition.  The purpose of this initiative was to provide training and preparation for those competing in state competitions that will be held at the Opryland Hotel.
Wendy Messer, HOSA Advisor of Lawrence County High School shares, “The HOSA Advisors of Lawrence County Schools decided to put on a county wide HOSA leadership conference in Lawrenceburg so that we could showcase our best and brightest Health Science students’ knowledge and skills.

We also wanted to promote unity between all three high schools at the competitive level and help the students realize that all three schools can accomplish so much more if we practice competitions as a team.  By the end of the day an amazing thing happened; all three high schools’ HOSA students were talking, sharing, and laughing together.”

The day began with a meet and greet session followed by an opening session provided by students and advisors.  Everyone enjoyed leadership ice breakers, inspirational stories, and video clips.

Breakout sessions were next on the agenda with a delicious meal provided by Career and Technical Education.  The afternoon closed with additional informative sessions presented by the HOSA Officers.

The HOSA Advisor of Loretto High School, Sherry Stout describes how the students benefited from the event, “My students were very excited about our Leadership Day, spending time with each school gave them an opportunity to network.

They came back to school very excited and with a lot of new ideas for our group.  Several of them made comments about how informative our break-out sessions were and they feel it helped to prepare them for state competition. They have already requested that we do it again next year only early in the year in August to help encourage our HOSA members to get more active in HOSA

Summertown High School HOSA Advisor, Robin Barnett explains, “The HOSA Leadership day was such a success. The students rarely get an opportunity to collaborate among the schools with other HOSA members.

This event allowed them to share ideas for their school, to share their strengths and weaknesses in order to come up with a more effective plan for their school clubs and the communities.  We plan to make this an annual event.”

Health Occupations Advisors include:  Sherri Stout (LHS), Robin Barnett and Jana Long (SHS), Wendy Messer, Alanna Harris, and Kris Fann (LCHS).
