Resident Reports Job Offer Was Actually A Scam

A Loretto woman told deputies Wednesday that a job listing that appeared in a reputable magazine has caused her to be bilked out of nearly $2,000.

The victim, a fifty-five-year-old resident of Busby Road filed the complaint with deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. She told deputies she had responded to an advertisement that appeared in a magazine, seeking individuals to serve as “mystery shoppers.”

Once she had been “hired” into the position, the victim said the company forwarded to her money orders, saying that the funds were to be used in the purchase of specified items. She was instructed to cash the money orders, keep a percentage of the funds, then forward the remainder to the company.

Once she had done so, the victim said she was notified by her bank that the money orders were fraudulent. In total, she told deputies she was out $1,900.

Investigation into the matter is on-going at the current time.
