Man Wields Toy Gun During Altercation

A local man was arrested by Lawrenceburg Police Officers Saturday after he allegedly wielded a toy gun during an altercation with an acquaintance.

According to police department reports an officer on patrol in the area of Sugar ‘N’ Spice market on East Gaines Street was approached by the victim of the assault around 2:50 p.m.

The victim told officers that he had been involved in a verbal dispute while at 520 East Heights Street. He indicated that during the dispute his neighbor had pulled the handgun and waived it about in a menacing manner.

Officers report they made their way to the residence and made contact with resident Michael Maurice Kelley, 56. Reports show that Kelley admitted to officers he had been involved in the dispute and had a weapon on his person.

He denied, however, having pointed the weapon at anyone. In addition, he told officers that the weapon was merely a toy gun. He stated that he had simply fired off some caps from the cap pistol during the dispute.

Officers report that Kelley produced the toy weapon, which was subsequently seized into evidence.

As a result of the incident Kelley was placed under arrest on charges of aggravated assault and transported to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. He is scheduled to answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on February 4, 2010.
