Credit Card Fraud Linked To Local Phone Numbers

A local couple discovered they had been targeted for identity theft after receiving a notice Tuesday regarding a change of personal information.

The couple reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that they had received the notification via email. It was sent to confirm a change in the address and telephone numbers associated with their Discover account.

The victims said they checked the account, finding that someone had used their card to make purchases at Best Buy that totaled $3,000. In addition, the person responsible had used $300 in bonus points for hotel certificates.

The couple contacted the Discover company to cancel the account. They were given two telephone numbers associated with the account. Both were local numbers.

The couple said that the company removed the charges from their account. They said they had no idea who might have committed the crime.
