Mom Apprehended After Threatening Family With Butcher Knife

A Summertown mother was arrested in the wake of a domestic altercation during the weekend, after she allegedly wielded a butcher knife and made threats toward family members.

Lawrence County Sheriffs’ Department reports show that Letha Certain, 40, of 1101 Dugout Road, Summertown, was booked through the Lawrence County Detention Center Sunday on charges of aggravated domestic assault.

Deputies were summoned to Certain’s home to intervene in the domestic situation just before 12:30 p.m. The husband reported he and his wife “had been horse playing for a while” and that she became angry, then combative.

According to the husband’s statement, Certain retrieved a butcher knife, then wielded it at him in a menacing manner. All the while Certain allegedly made repeated threats to throw the knife at him. After a time she laid down the knife and left the residence.

The couple’s children, ages 10 and 12, witnessed the altercation. Both gave statements confirming their father’s account of events.

Deputies report that the action apparently placed all three victims in fear for their lives.

Warrants were issued against Certain and she was later arrested at a home on North Bradley Road. Certain is scheduled to answer the charge in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on February 14, 2010.

A referral was made to the Department of Children’s Services. Members of that department will conduct additional investigation.
