Charges Follow Suspicious Purchase Of Cold Meds

The suspicious purchase of cold medication is what prompted law enforcement officials to arrest a Summertown man Friday on various drug related charges.

Reports show that an investigator with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department was contacted Friday afternoon by a clerk at Ledbetter’s Drug Store.

She reported that a woman was attempting to purchase cold medication containing pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient in meth. When asked for identification, the clerk said the woman presented a Florida driver license.

The clerk was instructed to make the sale. Once the woman exited the business and got into a car, deputies report they were able to make a traffic stop on the driver for failing to wear his seatbelt.

Investigators report the man possessed only a Florida driver license, but that his driving privileges had been revoked due to DUI charges. The man and woman, a mother and son, told investigators they have resided in Summertown for the past three years, but have been “waiting on their birth certificates” and could not obtain a Tennessee license until they received them.

After obtaining permission to conduct a search of the vehicle, agents report finding two marijuana pipes concealed inside a toolbox. The son, Timothy Scott Jackson, 39, of 8982-B Old Highway 43, Summertown, claimed ownership of the pipes. When asked he also admitted he had additional contraband at their home.

A search of the home was subsequently initiated. Inside, agents report finding a total of eight meth pipes along with six marijuana pipes, straws, a marijuana grinder, scales, five bags and aluminum foil bearing methamphetamine residue, rolling papers and a roach clip. All contraband was seized into evidence and Jackson arrested.

Jackson was booked through the Lawrence County Detention Center on charges of driving on a revoked license, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of Schedule III narcotics (meth). An appearance in Lawrence County General Sessions Court was scheduled for February 14, 2011.
