Authorities Investigate Cases Involving Animals

Law enforcement officers were called upon in past days to investigate several cases that involve animal disputes or instances of animal cruelty.

On Saturday deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department answered a call to 3930 Buffalo Road. The resident reported that her dog had been brutalized nearly a year ago, then went missing. She said that her daughter had just told her the injuries had been intentionally inflicted by her ex-boyfriend.

The victim reported her dog had sustained a broken neck and other serious injuries on February 14, of last year. The dog had survived, but medical costs had totaled more than $2,000. A month later, the victim said, her dog disappeared.

The daughter reported that her ex-boyfriend had thrown the dog against a brick wall, causing the injuries. When the dog later suffered a seizure, she said the ex-boyfriend punched it in the head, killing it, then threw it into the Buffalo River.

Deputies advised the victim to obtain a criminal summons in order to seek legal reparation.

On Friday deputies were summoned to a Summertown home to investigate after a Turnpike Road resident found that his dog had been intentionally injured. He told deputies he noticed blood on his Australian shepherd, then discovered someone had shot it in the leg with a three-inch dart.

A resident of Rabbit Trail Road filed a complaint with deputies on Sunday after he discovered dogs had caused the death of a calf. He told deputies a witness had seen dogs chasing his cow about the pasture while she was giving birth.

This, he said, resulted in the death of the calf. He said that when he went to the pasture, he found dogs were eating the carcass. The deputy spoke with the dog owners and reports they did confine their animals.
