Vandals Wielding Spray Paint Damage Churches, Store
Officials with several local churches and one market located in the West and South portions of the county, contacted law enforcement authorities Tuesday to report that vandals had used spray paint to paint obscenities and offensive graffiti on their buildings.
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies first responded to Bethel Baptist Church on Revilo Road in Leoma shortly after 8:30 a.m. A church representative reported that offensive graffiti had been painted on the brick walls of the church. He estimated damages at $300.
Shortly after 9:00 a.m., deputies responded to Self’s Market on Waynesboro Highway where the store owner reported finding offensive graffiti had been painted on both the door and wall of the building. She told deputies that she would review surveillance video to see whether the crime was recorded. She estimated damages at around $200.
Deputies were called to Mt. Zion Church of Christ on Mt. Zion Road in Leoma at 1:45 p.m. Church officials indicated that offensive graffiti had been painted on an exterior wall as well as a propane tank. Damages there were estimated at $3,500.
Officials with Deerfield Church of Christ on Waynesboro Highway requested a similar investigation shortly after 2:00 p.m. Church representatives said that considerable damage had been done when offensive graffiti was painted on the exterior walls of the structure. There, damages were assessed at $300.
In each instance, complainants reported that the damages had been incurred during the previous night.
Anyone who has information that might aid detectives in their investigation into the crimes should contact the sheriff’s department at 931-762-3626.
