Both Drivers In Weekend Crash Arrested For DUI

Authorities indicate that both drivers in a weekend hit and run crash have been arrested on multiple charges, including that of DUI.

Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were dispatched to a home on Raintree Court to investigate a hit and run incident shortly after 8:00 p.m. Saturday.

The complainant, Lauren Nicole Smith, age 18, told officers that she had been traveling south along North Locust Avenue and had stopped at the Fourth Street traffic light. She reported that driver Abigail Layne Gilliam, 19, of Gimlet Road, rear-ended her car, then left the scene. Smith then drove home before reporting the incident.

While interviewing Smith, officers noted detecting an odor of an alcoholic beverage about her person. When they made contact with Gilliam, they indicate she “had a very obvious odor of alcohol,” as well.

Officers report that field sobriety tests were administered to both women, but that both failed to perform satisfactorily. Both also refused a blood alcohol test.

As a result of the investigation both Gilliam and Smith were arrested on charges of first offense DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, underage consumption, and violation of the implied consent law. Both are scheduled for an initial appearance in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on February 4, 2011.
