Rezoning Effort Fails During Council Meeting

An effort to have property on Business Avenue rezoned to allow for the construction of mid-income housing failed Thursday because nobody made a motion for approval.

Members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Council held a public hearing on the ordinance during their bi-monthly business meeting Thursday morning.

An Alabama company had requested the parcel of land, owned by James E. and John H. Fleeman, be rezoned from Residential-2 and Commercial-3 to Residential-4, to allow for the construction of the multi-family units.

The company had proposed investing between $4 ½ and $5 million to construct the complex, with the intent to house those with incomes of between $15,000 and $26,000.

The proposed housing would consist of one, two and three bedroom apartments with monthly rent of up to $465 per month. Company officials were attempting to gain approval for government subsidies in the form of tax credits.

Three individuals addressed the council in opposition of the measure. Each expressed concerns regarding depreciation of property values and the impact that the construction would have regarding availability of commercial property in that area.

Following the public hearing Lawrenceburg Mayor Keith Durham opened the floor for a motion for approval, however none was made. As a result, no changes in zoning will be made.
