Leaders Eye Grant Funds For Bridge Replacement

Leaders with the City of Lawrenceburg have been asked to consider whether they intend to apply for grant funds to go toward a much-needed bridge replacement, or else yield the way for the county to apply.

The matter was brought up during a meeting of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Commissioners during their meeting Thursday morning. City Administrator William McLain pointed out that the city is eligible to apply for $500,000 in federal grant funding that could be earmarked for replacement of a bridge that crosses Coon Creek.

McLain pointed out that the small box bridge situated on Old Florence Road in the Raven’s Bluff area, currently tops the list of Lawrence County bridge’s targeted for replacement. Bridge on Old Florence Road McLain told council members that “there is undermining in the pillars” beneath the fifteen-ton bridge. In the wake of inspections the bridge has been moved to the top of the list as the bridge most in need of replacement.

McLain explained that replacement of the bridge is estimated to cost between $125,000 and $150,000. Should the city receive the grant funds, he said, the sum could be put aside for the project. If inspections next year cause the bridge to remain at the top of the list, he indicated that the city would then be eligible to apply for the grant funds once again.

McLain did not request that council members make any immediate decisions regarding whether to participate in the grant program. He did ask, however, that they consider the matter and make a decision. Should they opt not to apply for the funding, he explained, they would need to inform officials of such so that leaders of Lawrence County Government might make application.
