More Pets Poisoned With Pesticide

Law enforcement officials have reported that more pets in an area of Summertown have apparently been poisoned with a pesticide.

The owner of three dogs that went missing December 22 filed a complaint with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday. The owner reported that a hunter had notified her of finding the remains of two of the pets in a field behind her home.

The victim told deputies that the remains were dispatched for necropsy. Analysis revealed that the animals had been poisoned with the pesticide Furadan, used as a crop pesticide. Deputies note that the same pesticide had been identified as having caused the deaths of several other dogs in that area.

Residents have expressed concerns about whether the substance could pose a hazard to their children as well as whether it might leach into ground water.

Investigation into the matter is continuing at the current time. Anyone with information regarding the poisonings should contact the sheriff’s department at 762-3626.
