Officer Catches Four Stealing Metal From Railroad Trestle

A police officer on patrol in the early hours Monday reports catching four individuals stealing metal plates from a railroad trestle.

The incident occurred around 1:20 Monday morning as the officer was patrolling in the area of Garner Lane.

He reports noticing a van backed into the weeds on the side of the roadway, near the trestle. As he approached, he reports that a male subject ran to the van and climbed inside. The officer then used his patrol car to block the movements of the vehicle.

When he approached, the officer indicates he discovered four individuals inside the van; two males and two females. One of the females, he reports, began to cry.

When he questioned the four regarding their activities, they told the officer they had been removing metal plates from the railroad tracks and loading them into the van. The officer noted there were 16 metal plates loaded into the van and 8 more lying near the rear door.

The van occupants told the officer they had been doing the same thing in Ethridge around a month ago. They stated that they had permission from Southern Railroad to do so.

Officials with Lawrence Central Dispatch quickly contacted railroad officials and learned that no one had permission to remove anything from the tracks. The four were subsequently placed under arrest.

The four arrested included:  Stephanie Diane Dickson, 30, of 43 Kidd Road, Kelli Briana Robertson, 18, of 107 Marks Branch Road, Leoma, James M. Potts, 23 of 14 Good Hope Road, Lawrenceburg, and Cocuyo Jose Cobaxin, 33, of 1017 First Avenue, Lawrenceburg. Each was booked through the Lawrence County Jail under charges of vandalism and theft over $500. All four are scheduled for an initial appearance through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on Friday, February 5, 2010.
