Property Owner Suffers Loss Through Theft, Vandalism

A man who owns property locally experienced a considerable monetary loss recently as the result of burglary, theft and vandalism.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched Wednesday to investigate crimes at a property located at 513 Henryville Road.

The owner, who resides in Columbia, reported that he had allowed a couple to live at the residence. He said he had planned to allow them to purchase the property in the future.

The owner told deputies that his son had checked the property and found that there was no power. He said he drove to the property and discovered that someone had pried open a latch on his outbuilding and stolen a large number of power tools and other personal property he had stored there.

Inside the home the owner found that the living room carpet had been removed and one wall had a large hole. Two bedroom suits were missing along with a daybed and a twin bed. He said he found the dishwasher had been removed and discarded in the back yard.

The owner told deputies that he had made contact with the woman he had allowed to live at the property. She told him that she and the male resident had broken up and that she had moved out around three months prior.

She told the owner that the male had been staying at the home without any power. Deputies noted that a generator was found with an extension cord running through a window into the home.

Altogether, loss and damages sustained by the property owner were estimated at nearly $20,000. Investigation in the matter is continuing through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
