Victim Learns Of High Balance On Fraudulently Obtained Credit Card
Authorities opened an investigation last week after a local man reported that someone had fraudulently obtained a credit card in his name, then racked up thousands in debt.
The fifty-one year old Loretto resident reported to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday that he had learned of the crime after receiving a call about a past due balance on a Discover card.
The victim said that someone had used his name and personal information to obtain the card in September of 2014. Company officials told the victim that in October there had been a transfer from the card to SunTrust bank in the amount of $5,400.
The victim told deputies that he does not have an account at SunTrust, nor does he have a Discover card account. The matter was reported through the Discover company’s fraud department. Investigation into the crime is currently on-going.
