Winter Weather Brings Most Activity To A Standstill

After spending only two days in the classroom following the Christmas break, youngsters were excited to awake Monday to find the entire area heavily blanketed in snow.

Throughout the night Sunday and into Monday morning copious amounts of the white stuff blanketed the Southern Middle Tennessee area. At the winter storm’s peak up to an inch per hour of snow was reported.

The greatest amounts were measured east of Lawrence County, with a hefty 13 inches reported in the Minor Hill area of Giles County. In the extreme northern areas of Middle Tennessee, however, areas saw as little accumulation as one inch.

The heavy snow disrupted more than just the school schedule. Many local businesses, industries, and even governmental offices closed down in an effort to keep motorists off the roadways and prevent potential crashes and injuries.

While many spent their time indoors staying warm or outdoors building snow men and engaging in snowball battles, emergency personnel were on the alert and road workers spent long, hard hours attempting to clear major roadways.

Additional snowfall is predicted for the overnight hours, and at this point officials anticipate that the snow may be around for several days.
