Authorities Respond To Vicious Dog Reports

Law enforcement officials have been called upon in recent days to investigate several instances involving vicious dogs in one Summertown neighborhood.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, deputies have been dispatched on multiple occasions to an area of Daley Street. On Friday, one resident reported the dogs had killed his five-year-old dachshund. He told deputies he had let his dog out for a moment, but that he disappeared. He said that he scoured the neighborhood, checking with neighbors who might have seen his pet. He learned that his dog had been attacked by two large dogs, and killed in a ditch. A young neighbor had then buried the dog in his backyard.

Deputies were dispatched to a Daley Street home on Saturday where an eighty-year-old resident reported the same dogs had acted viciously toward her while she was at her mailbox. She told deputies that the dogs barked at her and darted toward her, as if to bite her. She reported that she had turned and walked back to her house at a fast pace, making it inside without injury. In addition, she stated that the dogs had killed her neighbor’s dog the day before, and that they had placed her in fear for her safety.

Deputies report making contact with a resident at the dogs’ home. She told them that the dogs belong to her daughter, who is currently incarcerated. She said that she has been feeding the animals as well as possible to keep them from starving, but that it has proven to be a great financial burden. She told the deputies that she has made attempts to place the dogs with others, but that she has been unable to find them a home.

Deputies informed the resident that since the dogs are in her care, she is responsible for their conduct. They emphasized that the problem must be addressed, and advised her to restrain the dogs or confine them in a pen.
