Officer Sustains Broken Leg While Capturing Suspect

The suspect in a domestic violence incident led police officers on an extensive chase Thursday evening which ultimately led to a broken leg for one policeman.

Assistant Police Chief Darren Goolsby said Friday morning that the matter began around 7:00 p.m. when officers were dispatched on a domestic violence call.

The suspect, Jason Perry, age 32 of Lawrenceburg, had reportedly assaulted his girlfriend. She sustained injuries and was taken to Crockett Hospital for treatment.

Officers went to the home to speak with Perry and report he was inside alone, making threats to harm himself. Officers had been made aware that Perry was armed at that time.

Officers went to sign warrants against Perry for domestic assault. They indicate that when they approached him in the area of Highway 43 South, he fled in his vehicle. While officers gave chase Goolsby said Perry was displaying a weapon.

The chase led officers out of the city limits, into the county, then back into the city limits once again. They were joined in the operation by deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Goolsby said they followed Perry to his mother’s home on Maple Avenue. He went inside and refused to come out. Officer Brian Hagan, Goolsby said, established a repartee with Perry.

He eventually talked Perry into laying down his weapon and exiting the house. Once Perry exited, Hagan grabbed him, and Perry began to resist. Other officers assisted in taking Perry to the ground and handcuffing him.

During the ruckus, Hagan sustained injury to his leg. He was transported by ambulance to Crockett Hospital where it was discovered his leg was fractured in two places.

Perry was transported to the hospital as well. Goolsby said he had cut his wrists several times and was bleeding. In addition he continued to make threats to harm himself.

The Crisis Team was subsequently called in to evaluate his mental state. Around 3:00 a.m. they reported Perry could be released.

Perry was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked without further incident.
