Lawrenceburg Commissioner Buford Goolsby Dies

City of Lawrenceburg Commissioner Buford Goolsby died Saturday, ending his lengthy battle with cancer.

Goolsby, age 67, was retired from Lawrenceburg Golf and Country Club where he was employed for thirty years, began serving his second term as commissioner in July. While a commissioner he served as a member of the Lawrenceburg Utility Board. In addition, he was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Lawrenceburg Mayor Keith Durham issued the following statement regarding Goolsby’s passing:

“Saturday the citizens of Lawrenceburg lost an advocate, Buford Goolsby. Buford honorably served as Commissioner and frequently went above and beyond his elected call of duty. He always applied a ‘common sense’ approach to matters that came before the commission.

“Our most sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Sandra, Darren, Lisa, and other family members. It is hard to dismiss someone of his caliber in our community...and I find it's even harder to say good-bye to a friend.”

Goolsby is survived by wife Sandra, daughter Lisa Porter, and son Daren Goolsby, all of Lawrenceburg. Funeral services were held Monday, January 7, 2008, at Neal Funeral Home.

Under the Charter of the City of Lawrenceburg, "Any vacancy in the Board of Mayor and Commissioners shall be filled by appointment made by the remaining members thereof, and the commissioner so appointed shall serve for the remainder of the unexpired term, but any portion of an unexpired four-year term for commissioner or mayor that remains beyond the next municipal election shall be filled by the voters at that election, if the vacancy occurs at least forty-five days before the latest time for filing nominating petitions for candidates in that election.” The next city election is scheduled for May of 2009.

The charter requires that commissioners appoint a replacement for Goolsby within 45 days.
