Dog Shot While Walking With Owners

A Loretto couple was heartbroken Saturday when their pet dog was shot and killed while taking a stroll with them across their property.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies were summoned to the 366 Beartown Road home of Bernd Karl Koebberling around 5:00 p.m. Koebberling reported that he and his wife had been taking a stroll on their land with their dogs prior to the shooting incident. Koebberling said that as they approached property owned by a neighbor, his one-year-old Fiest ran over a hill. At that point, the couple reported hearing a gunshot, one yelp from the dog, a second gunshot, then silence.

Koebberling told deputies that he began yelling and ran up the hill only to find his dog lying dead, 20 to 30 feet over his neighbor’s property line. Deputies report that the dog was lying underneath a deer stand, however Koebberling did not see anyone about.

The deputy reports that he attempted to make contact with the neighbor who owns the property in an effort to find out who had been hunting from the deer stand. He was, however, unable to make contact with anyone at that time.

Investigation into the matter is continuing at the current time through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
