Burglary May Have Been Foiled Kidnapping Attempt
Authorities are working to determine whether the burglary of a Summertown home on New Year’s Day was committed in an attempt to kidnap a teenage girl.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were called to the home shortly after noon. The resident reported that he and his family had been away during the morning hours and returned to discover their home had been burglarized.
Items were strewn about inside the residence and several random items had been stolen. Missing were such items as a box of Christmas ornaments, DVD players, cell phone, skateboard, medications, assorted knives and daggers, a Samurai sword, BB pistol, check books, and several jewelry items. Altogether the items are valued at more than $1,100.
The resident reported that they had found two toboggans lying in the living room that did not belong to any of the family members. The teen told deputies that when she and a boyfriend had broken up two months before, he had made threats to “break into the house and kidnap her.” Deputies noted that entry had been gained by breaking out a window in the girl’s bedroom.
Department detectives are currently investigating the crime. Anyone who has information that would assist in the investigation is encouraged to contact the department at 931-762-3626.
