Neighbor Interrupts Burglary In Progress

A resident showing concern over his neighbor’s property likely prevented thousands of dollars in damages when he stumbled upon a burglary in progress in the Leoma area Sunday evening.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that the neighbor was passing a dwelling at 40 Chance Road when he noticed a four door, white Nissan car parked in the yard.

He told deputies he slowed nearly to a stop and saw a white male stick his head up over the dashboard and look at him. He told deputies that he recognized both the car and the man. The neighbor drove to his home and called Lawrence Central Dispatch to report the matter.

When deputies arrived, they report the suspects had already left the scene. Deputies found that the attic ladder had been pulled down and damaged, a window broken from the entry door, several feet pf 12-2 electrical wire and copper water pipes had been cut from the home, the fuse box damaged, and the sliding glass door left open.

The neighbor told deputies that the owner of the property, John W. Davenport, resides in Millcrest, Florida. Deputies later spoke with Davenport by telephone. He sent a relative to the scene to handle the situation.

The matter remains under investigation at the present time by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
