Investigators Delve Into Dog Killings

Law enforcement officials were called upon to initiate an investigation last week after a local resident discovered someone had killed two of his dogs.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to the 861 Weakley Creek Road home of Gary Gray.

Gray told deputies he had been away on December 25th but that his niece had remained at the home. Shortly before he arrived home, she noticed that Gray’s dogs were missing from the fenced in area outside.

Gray said the gate had been opened inward. He pointed out that it “would have been nearly impossible for the dogs to do this.”

It was not until two days later that Gray found one of the two dogs. He found his male Border Collie lying dead in his neighbor’s yard. He had died as the result of a gunshot wound.

The following day, Gray reported he found his second dog. The female Healer mix was found lying beneath the same neighbor’s porch.

Although the dog was still alive when he found her, Gray said she died within mere minutes. The Healer had sustained a laceration to the head.

Gray told deputies that the neighbor on whose property both dogs were found was not suspected of wrongdoing.

Investigation into the matter is continuing as detectives work to identify the culprit who committed the crimes.
